Antacid Recalls
Currently, all ranitidine products have been voluntarily recalled in the United States due to potential contamination with the byproduct NDMA. The FDA has requested that all companies that manufacture ranitidine to withdraw their products from the market. This includes over-the-counter and prescription ranitidine products such as:
- Zantac 75 tablets
- Zantac 150 tablets
- Zantac 150 Maximum Strength
- Zantac 150 Maximum Strength Cool Mint
- Wal-Zan 75
- Wal-Zan 150
- Acid Control (ranitidine)
- Acid Reducer (ranitidine)
- Heartburn Relief (ranitidine)
- Prescription ranitidine (150mg and 300mg)
Manufacturers that have recalled ranitidine antacids include Sanofi, Apotex, Sandoz, Perrigo Company PLC, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd, Lannett Company Inc, Novitium Pharma LLC, Amneal Pharmaceuticals LLC, Northwind Pharmaceuticals, Appco Pharma LLC, and several others.
Ranitidine is not the only antacid facing lawsuits from consumers and allegations of dangerous side effects. Nexium (esomeprazole), Prilosec (omeprazole), and Prevacid (lansoprazole) have been linked to an increased risk of gastrointestinal cancer.
Antacid Lawsuits
Tests have found that many ranitidine antacids contain up to 8,000x more NDMA (N-nitrosodimethylamine) than the FDA considers safe. NDMA is a byproduct or impurity and a probable carcinogen. It’s believed that the ranitidine molecule breaks down when exposed to temperatures higher than room temperature or in the human body to create NDMA. Stanford studies have also shown that people who take ranitidine have elevated levels of NDMA in their urine.
Overexposure to NDMA may cause a range of side effects such as abdominal pain, jaundice, and nausea. It may also impair lung, kidney, and liver function. Antacids have been linked to several types of cancer, including cancer of the colon, rectum, liver, stomach, bladder, pancreas, esophagus, and prostate; leukemia, multiple myeloma, and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Lawsuits have been filed against many manufacturers of ranitidine antacids claiming the manufacturers failed to warn consumers of the dangerous side effects of the drugs. There are also allegations that the link between ranitidine and cancer has been known since the 1980s.
If you took ranitidine antacids and were diagnosed with cancer or serious side effects like impaired kidney function, you may be eligible to file an antacid lawsuit against the manufacturer to seek damages for your injuries.
